What OT setting is Ted most interested in?
The million-dollar question, "What OT setting is Ted most
interested in?” After asking my fellow OT students what setting they are most
interested in, the most common answer is pediatrics. I love the excitement children
bring, however, I am most interested in hand therapy! Hands are complex and
require extensive knowledge to treat. We experience life with our hands, using
them to take care of ourselves, communicate, and feel. The importance of
experiencing life through our hands is what interests me the most. After
observing with a hand therapist, I’ve realized that most patients in hand
therapy clinics may be recovering from an injury, limb amputation, or a developing chronic upper extremity disorder. This is a new life change for most
clients, so they may be struggling to “experience life” or participate in occupations
with this new change. I have personal experience adapting to new tasks and
occupations due to my hand condition, bilateral thumb hypoplasia. This
experience provides the understanding suitable for knowing how a client may
feel.
